Anthony Davis is a two-time All-American who played both college football and baseball, and played professionally for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams before retiring early due to injuries. Having ballooned to over 300 lbs. over the past 10 years with obesity-related health problems, Anthony decided to undergo Gastric Bypass surgery in order to take back control of his life. On March 11, 2006, Anthony underwent the procedure LIVE on the internet for Lite and Hope viewers.

I’m back once again!
I’m going to get straight into it today. Fear is something we all encounter in out lives. But let me ask you a question… Why have fear of dying from the surgery, when every day the consequences of your weight are killing you?
Complications from obesity will end your life quickly or it could end your life slowly but surly by attacking all of your vital organs, killing you over a period of time. Like I have said before, I am not a doctor so I am not going to give anyone out there medical advice. I can however give my own opinions and share my experiences, and lead by my example.
Gastric bypass surgery has changed my life, in that it has given me a chance to live my life. We all know the bright side of things: looking good in your clothes, not being the fatty in pictures, being able to succeed at daily life activities, etc. But it’s the moments that aren’t so obvious that are worth living for: family, friends, good conversation, laughter, freedom. All these things we tend to take for granted come into perspective when life/death is knocking at our door.
If you would have told me even two years ago that I would be wearing size 32” pants, I would have looked at you like an idiot. But here I am. I enjoy the details so much more now. Of course I was nervous about the surgery. I mean it’s knives and tubes, anesthesia and meds; there are so many possibilities for human error. That is why I choose Dr. Alan Wittgrove to perform my surgery. And each of you need surgeons that know this procedure forward, backward, inside, outside, everything is emblazoned in their minds. You also have to analyze the situation. I could die trying, though the chances were slim, or I could die blindly hoping that one-day a diet and exercise regimen would work for me.
That’s it from me. I just want to let everyone out there know, gastric bypass has been a blessing in my life. Talk it over with your doctors, because they know you each better than I do, and they know your medical history etc.
So, my Trojans lost to UCLA. What universe am I in?
Until next time! PS happy holidays and watch those winter pounds…

I’m back again!
Not much has changed with me. I feel great and have a tremendous amount of energy still. I have been busy; it is football season after all, so I apologize for less blogs.
To get straight down to business, I am proud of those of you who have made the commitment to live better lives. Gastric Bypass surgery is not the answer, but a tool to use to loose the weight, and I am happy for those of you who are doing well. Roger I am glad to hear your surgery was a success and even happier to hear Dr. Alan Whittgrove was the man to make it happen. I wish you nothing but the best my man in the near future.
And to Michael, wow man; please give your sister my well wishes. It’s so interesting how the human body can be so alike and so different at the same time. Everyone’s body reacts differently to the surgery, but nonetheless I am glad to hear she is doing well now. And major props to you for doing your own research about the procedure. Lite and Hope’s website is a wonderful and useful tool to find information about gastric bypass. Yeah, I just saw Briscoe at the funeral services for Marlin McKeever. Such a small world this is. And I hope your son wasn’t too taken back from the stories of our glory times. Those were some times though.
Hey Jeremy, I am sure there are highly qualified doctors in Ohio trained to do the skin tightening procedures. Off the top of my head I don’t have any names, but I am sure the people at Lite and Hope would be able to find out. Their network of doctors spans the nation. Furthermore, my tolerance for pain is elevated, so although I did not experience any pain after my treatments, it might be different for others. And just a note to add to that, the laser treatments might affect your hair growth, so ask your doctor if you have any questions regarding this.
And finally to Lyana, I am glad to hear you are enjoying your new body. One word of advice or caution, don’t over do it. The best way to loose weight and build muscle is to work out and then let your body rest to recover. The average person needs a work out three times a week. Some researchers say gastric bypass patients swap one addiction for another (now that consuming too much food is less of an option), I hope for your health you are not going down this path. But I am sure your doctor would know more about what you need and the specific limitations of your body. Make sure to include a trainer or doctor in on your work out regimen. You all are doing a great job! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your stories.
Well, that’s all from me for now. I told you I would keep you all updated on any speaking engagements that come up for me. Well, on November 29th, I will be speaking at St. Joseph’s Hospital about men’s health and obesity related issues along with my personal story with obesity.
I understand it might be difficult for post gastric bypass patients with the holiday seasons near; but remember: there are consequences for everything, and that one slice of pie or second helping of stuffing may be all it takes for your body to… dump.
Happy Thanksgiving! Until next time, Fight on!

I am back, again!
I think the Live Web Chat with Dr. Vince Afsahi and myself went well. The participants had some really good questions and it was nice to speak to the Lite and Hope visitors in real time. If you missed the Web Chat session, you can view the transcript on the Lite and Hope website. You know, this Internet thing is relatively new to me, I understand the basics, but not much beyond that; so I am glad Dr. Afsahi felt comfortable with the set-up and etc. Nonetheless, it was an experience I will not soon forget. Maybe we will try it again.
And I want to thank all of you who left comments for my last blog. I truly enjoy reading them. You want to know something; I like having comments from the readers available because I think it’s good for others to read them as well. You have all heard my story. But what you haven’t heard is what others, just like you, are experiencing. Our reasons for having the surgery might be different: sleep apnea, high blood pressure, or a desire to see our children grow up and accomplish things, or even for a personal desire to better ones self.
For Jason, I don’t run at the moment, but I plan to slowly begin conditioning myself to start up again. I do some walking. And over the next couple of weeks I will alter my routine to include jogging and hopefully some running later. You’re right my man, after 50, people start slowing down. But that is no excuse not to be active. I am constantly moving around, though. If it is possible, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or park the car away from the entrance, and that way making small adjustments to everyday life, you can see some difference and still get in more of a work out then before.
For Mark and Roger, I hope both of your surgeries went well, and your new lives are now beginning. Congratulations! I hope both of you reach your desired weight loss goals and take advantage of this new lease on life you both have been given. It is an amazing journey you have both started in your own individual ways. Just remember post-op affects us all differently. In no way is gastric bypass or any other bariatric surgery an easy way out of weight loss. It takes commitment and you both will learn what foods work for your body. Enjoy.
To Helen, Liana, and Mary, I hope you all keep up the good work and congratulations on your weight loss. Together you all have lost over 200 pounds, that’s almost me! Don’t be afraid to live your lives because you have new bodies. Enjoy the new lives you all have worked so hard to achieve. It is awkward sometimes. I must admit when I put on my size 32 pants, I was a little baffled, but I sure got over that quickly. Because you have to realize you look good, so there is no need to be scared of this new body.
And now to Ronald, thank you for your complements. I appreciate them. I agree with you, that I am qualified to commentate on football games but let’s be real, it’s all politics, and it is tough to break into that industry. I would definitely entertain any offers to become a commentator, but only time will tell.
Anyway, I am still 213. I am still loosing inches, instead of pounds, but I am a lot healthier then I was before, and I am completely happy with the progress I am making. I sleep well at night, and I have more energy during the day.
My Trojans are ranked No. 2, and they are still a young team so I am excited to see what they will achieve in the games to come. I am still finalizing my plans for the USC vs. Notre Dame game, but I will keep you all up to date.
Until next time!

Planning surgery for first of next year(2007), due to a Thyroid problem, have gained 75 pounds in 10 months. Due to a previous back injury, the added weight has caused me to be unable to walk for than a few steps. My concern is the type of foods that can be digested after surgery. Pre-op consulation information said that any form of bread or pasta, etc., will actually plug up the new pouch and cause extreme pain. Cannot find a chat session on the internet to answer my pre-op questions. Want to hear from people who have gone through the precedure. Please let me know any negative effects you have had as well as, of course, the positive effects of weight loss. Since I am 60 years young, I do not want to mess up any more than I already have. Thank you so much

Hey Anthony. Thanks for the well wishes on my surgery. It went very well. The hospital staff at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood was fabulous! They made sure that I was as comfortable as I could get. I am so glad that my first major surgery experience was there.
Only mild complication I had was low blood-sugar. But, I quickly learned I wasn't getting enough calories. I have lost just about 70 lbs. already since Sept. 25th and my doctor, Dr. Jeremy Korman (the best) is amazed. I go to the gym about 5 times a week and love it. I don't get winded like I used to. I can walk around the corner and not have to stop. I don't take my diabetic medication and one of my blood pressure meds anymore (Hallejulia). There are also a few others that I don't need to take anymore. Just my supplements, and a couple of prescribed medication.
Only problem I am having is learning how to eat slower and take smaller bites. Every mealtime I must concentrate on what I am doing, but there have been a couple of times that I didn't (either talking to friends or watching tv while eating and my pouch reminds me right away.
I am wondering if you or anyone experienced itching? I have talked to the surgeon and my primary care doctor and they don't seem to know what the deal it. I am guessing that my skin is adjusting to the new butterfly (me) coming out of the cocoon. Any thougths.....anyone?
Well, much love to you man and keep up the good work. We sure need you here. Well, I will speak for myself, I need you here. Wish I would have caught the online chat with you and Dr. Afsahi. Oh well, I am sure there will be a next time.

Hello "Master-Man" A.D.
Just briefly, I was talking to my 10 year old son about you the other day. You see, we were in Border's book store and I stumbled across ESPN's encylopedia of college football. In 1975, I played football at Princeton University and actually fininshed 3rd in the nation in Kickoff return average, behind you at number one, and Luther Blue from Iowa State at number two. I told my son how tremendous a player you were and honoered I have always been to be able to say that I finished behind you in the national rankings.
Enough football, the reason I stumbled across this site is because my sister had gastric bypass surgery and has lost a tremendous amount of weight. I'm always on the internet research the subject. She has had a complication or two but is doing well. Just want to finish by saying that I hope you continue to be blessed with good health. Perhaps on one of my next trips to California we can get together for a moment or two. I am from Omaha, Nebraska and actually have a friend or two that either live out there or visit constantly. Marlon Briscoe is a friend, as is Johnny "the jet" Rodgers. Again, good luck and god bless.

Wow! Thank you for responding to my comment. I am beginning to realize how much fun this is and the fact that my body is changing. I have now lost 82 pounds since surgery and I have about 78 to go until I hit my personal goal. But in total I have lost 128 pounds... That is just insane to me. The last couple of months I have really been hitting the gym... I mean like 4-6 times a week. I want good results and I want them quickly so I am helping it along. I figured... "I've done this much to bring change why not go all the way... And actually look good!"
Well, it is good to hear from you and I hope all is well! If you get the chance if you can get a message to Carnie... I would really like to hear from her. She has been an inspiration to me through this whole thing. Thanks Anthony... Can't wait to hear from you again!

Hi Anthony:
I am now 1 month post op and all went extremely well! I sailed thru the surgery and the post op with out one problem. Dr. Wittgrove was amazing, as was Dr. Kostanzer. I did develop gout in my left foot a week after surgery. Boy was that painful! But it went away, and all is well. I am tolerating foods well and doing everything they tell me to do. I am down 30 lbs in the first month. It is a truly amazing experience and am so grateful that I am doing so well so far! Thanks for your encouragement and keep up the good work!
TROJANS are NO. 1 !!!!
» 09/18/2006:
Well, I’m back again!
To begin, there is one thing that has gotten my attention as of late and actually someone mentioned it to me two weeks after my surgery, and that is the fact that things will affect my body differently, now that I only had this little 4-ounce pouch as a stomach. It has been studied that post-operation patients may shift their ‘addictions to food’ to another addiction. Since the stomach can no longer be used to harbor a food addiction, some patients become addicted to alcohol, smoking, drug use, and sugars. With the smaller pouch functioning as the new stomach, post gastric bypass patients need to realize that there are not the same enzymes and acids necessary to breakdown complex foods anymore. This pouch just does not have them. That is why this surgery is a major life changing event and commitment is essential for success. One glass of wine before the operation is like drinking three glasses after the surgery. Of course, with alcohol as well as the gastric bypass procedure, people react in different ways according to their individual bodies. Nonetheless, alcohol is probably the most detrimental thing, other than nicotine, and of course abusing drugs is deadly. I think the least harmful of these is sugar, but that is no excuse to justify snacking on unhealthy foods. Some might say, “Well, at least I’m not shooting heroin, AD.” Don’t give me that! You’re still harming your new body, which you fought so hard to get. Why waste it?
In any case, my weight is holding steady between 213 and 219, and I still want to be 205 lbs by the end of September. You know something; I often wonder why it is always 213 or 219? Why can’t I just be and even 210 or 220 lbs? It’s odd. And those who see me from week-to-week can see the difference in my face and body. It is like someone is taking a chisel to my body and sculpting something new every week.
My diet is relatively the same. One thing I have gotten into the habit of doing is keeping water in the refrigerator. I either put a bottle of water in there or a glass to chill. Yeah, I like a cold glass. And it feels good when the cold water goes into my pouch. And though my numbers on the scale have staled, I am happy with my state of progress. I am still loosing inches! For example, I went from having a 22” neck to a 16.5” and now I have a 16” neck. My waist has gone from 48” pre surgery to my current waist which is 32 inches. A thought that crosses my mind often is that if my weight loss was this rapid, then might it be possible for me to achieve my collegiate and professional stats of 195 lbs with a 30” waist? Well, though it’s only a thought, I know that if I had to do double day work outs like when I played college and professional football, I would be skin and bones.
When I started hitting 220 lbs, I knew I had to start pacing myself. Because when one looses weight too fast one ends up with sagging skin. I am fortunate enough to not have this problem, but for those patients who are morbidly obese, it is a real problem. I am so thankful to be working with Dr. Vince Afsahi (off-saw-he) with the laser surgery and microdermabrasion. Dr. Afsahi is a great dermatologist who was trained at my alma mater USC and uses state of the art laser equipment from Syneron(make this the syneron link........syneron.com). I know a lot of guys are out there reading this and thinking to themselves: this man is crazy-this man is vain-AD is a pretty boy! Well, I will tell them to get over their manhood problems and come to terms with the reality of it: men need to keep themselves looking good, especially men who have had gastric bypass. I am so fortunate to have these procedures available to me, and to be under the care of the best physicians in the world; my surgeon Dr. Alan Wittgrove, my nutritional advisor Dr. Lee Trotter, Dr. Vince Afsahi, my dermatologist. And I would like you to know that these things can be available to you too. Lite and Hope has joined with some great corporations to provide patients with Metagenics products for nutritional supplements, thr I-Flow corporation that makes the amazing On-Q PainBuster, Laser non surgical skin treatments from SYNERON, surgical procedure financing options from CARE CREDIT, as well as life insurance from Prudential for those who maintain the acceptable weight loss a year post surgery.
It is all about getting back to a place where you like yourself again. Because let’s face it, being obese and out of shape (especially if you know how good you look healthy) takes a toll on self-esteem levels. Of course, it is better to be slim and trim instead of fat and greasy?
One last note in closing, I didn’t have too many responses to my last blog. You all are probably tired of my repeating my same old stories, my apologies for no dumping episodes this week. Anyway, I want to hear from you all reading this, especially if you have had the surgery. You all know what I have gone through and what I continue to endure. But since we know that each individual is different, I want to hear about some of your stories and experiences. I look forward to hearing from you.
Hey, my Trojans are ranked No. 4 in the nation, it’s football season!
Until next time!

Hi AD,
I am a 38 y/o female and I had my WLS surgery March 20, 2006. I have lost a total of 90lbs. I have mixed feelings. When I was overweight, most people did not even acknowledge me. Now that I have lost weight, everyone is talking to me especially men. I feel sad at times because I want them to understand that I am the same person I was before I had the surgery. The only difference is that I am thinner and I feel a little more confident. I have lost only a few friends since my surgery. I have been told that I am getting to thin and they do not want to go out with me because I will get all the attention. I can not believe an adult said that to me. Why are people like that? Anyways, on a happier note, I am looking forward to reaching my goal weight. I am 5'10 and I weigh 207lbs. I have been 207lbs. for the last three weeks. I am losing inches. I appreciate you keeping everyone abreast on your progress. It really encourages me to stay strong. The indirect support has been a great help. I want to thank you for sharing your WLS experience with the world. I look forward to your next blog. God Bless.

Hey Anthony it's me Mark from Long Beach, CA. My surgery is tomorrow morning. I am the first one on the schedule. I told my doctor, Dr. Jeremy Korman, to have a good weekend cause I am first on his list next week, lol. Well, I have begun the bowel prep. and my new life is beginning. I am truly excited and with encouragement from you and others, plus the grace of God, I feel like I will be very, very successful. Thanks again, and I'll keep on reading.

Hi Anthony:
I just wanted to post and say congrats... You have done well. I am a 27 year old female and I had my WLS on May, 16, 2006. Since then I have lost 69 pounds and in total 114 from my highest weight in Aug. 2005 of 360.
I feel like a butterfly coming out of her cacoon. I have been over weight since I was a little girl and I am a little nervous now because I have no idea of what it feels like to be thin or thinner. I will hit my thinest weight in my adult life in about 10 pounds.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that you look really good. Actually, you are a cutie! I pray that everything continues to go well for you...
Can you please do me a favor... I have been looking for Carnie's posts but she has not posted since January... can you let her know she is missed and I would love to get in contact with her... She has been a big inspiration to me post-op. I would love to meet her!
Thanks! I'd love to hear from you also. Pen pals are fun!

Anthony: After seeing you on TV I was wondering if you ever do any announcing for college football games? I think you would be a great color commentator......since SC is such a national power, I would think that you would be great.....I think your teammate Pat Hayden does the Notre Dame games, why are you not on camera for channels like ESPN or FOX Sports....you have my vote and now that you are slim, you really would be a great addition to any broadcast team.....

Hi Anthony:
Well, my surgery is tomorrow. I am excited. Hearing all the stories of success from everyone and from you gives me peace about it. I think you have done very well. I was an athlete in high school and college. I coached college football and played also in high school. Not at USC though, unfortunately! I was in great athletic shape like you, but the weight just piled on after college. I am 5-9 and 290...similar to the way you were. I hope to get down under 200, but we're all built differently. You look great in the pictures and on tv also. I am really proud of your weight loss success and you helped me very much to make this decision to do this. I watched your surgery on line and was amazed. Dr. Wittgrove is the best and I'm glad I've got him too! Keep the blogs coming....we never get bored with them! I'll let you know how it went.....wish me luck! Roger

Hi Anthony!
I have been reading your blogs and watching your progress.
I had my surgery on May 17th '06. I have lost 50lbs so far. I need to lose a total of 100lbs. I am 5'4" and am hoping to reach my goal by febuary of '07.
I am doing much better with my water consumption and my solid food intake is better, although I still have problems. Chicken of any kind just doesnt go well no matter how much I chew it. I cant seem to keep it down and it really hurts. I think it just backs up and I am not able to digest it.
Other then that, I am doing well. I could step up the exercise pace, but I actually snorkeled for the first time in my life. ( I live in S OC Calfornia) For anyone else who lives in the area....go snorkeling on the north beach at the Montage resort...awesome! I also rode a bike for the first time in years. My son thought it was so cool to see his Mom on a bike! I am able to rest a piece of paper on my lap now that I have one! I cross my legs and can sit comfortably that way for long periods of time. I am almost normal again. I know that term sounds strange, but it feels so good to be able to do these simple things. I still have another 50 lbs to go, but I am getting there and I am so glad I did this surgery!
Thanks for your posts, Anthony. It helps to hear how others are doing
Looking forward to reading more.

» 08/30/2006:
I’m back!
Well, for the gentleman who is 5’8” and 316 lbs, I would just like to say to you the diseases you have, are unfortunate; and it’s good you have a spiritual background, which I am not here to discredit, but I just want to know, that you shouldn’t have any fear. Yes, we all have fear, we are human beings, but you need to have the courage to overcome that fear because remember if you don’t do anything, you’re going to die any way, so what do you have to loose? There are a lot of people who talk about the fear of having the surgery but what they don’t realize is that they are self-destructive anyway. Any day, any time they could die from a heart attack or a stroke. Then there are those who walk around, regardless of knowing the effects of their obesity, and still choose not to do anything! Obesity is not joke. People, don’t have any fear, just take it from me, I was a 205 lbs running back in the pros, chiseled, hard as a rock, and involved with TV film and print work. Then fast-forward twenty some odd years and can you imagine how I felt at 300 lbs. I knew what my body was supposed to look like. If you think about it, I was definitely abusing myself, and that is what obese people are doing to themselves. Like I have said in earlier blogs, which might be crazy but I’m going to say it again anyway, when I look at over weight people, I can only wonder what is going on inside that body. Do they realize what they are doing to themselves? I really have to think, when they sit down and eat that cheeseburger, or four slices of pizza, or apple pie or even the fries, do they understand the consequences of their actions. Sure there is a fear of having surgery, because anything can happen on the table. But we need to realize, that after getting as big as a house, we are just ticking time bombs. We all have to be responsible for saving our own lives.
I think back to former NFL great Reggie White and baseball great Kirby Puckett, and I think about these world-class athletes just like myself who let themselves go. They had all that greatness in the past and now they are not able to share it with their family and friends. It saddens me because they could have done something about it. There is a crossroads in every person’s life. We can act and change our paths to become better human beings or we can continue along and keep our day-to-day destructive behaviors. I don’t know if they were naïve to the problems at hand, or if they simply chose to ignore the signs; all I know is they should be living here amongst us today.
When I talk about not having the fear but having courage instead, I think back to what I used to tell my coaches. I would say: just hand me the ball and let me make that touchdown, but don’t be thrown for a loss. For those of you, who don’t understand, that’s a football term meaning, don’t stumble on your way to victory. We all have to make those touchdowns.
For Jeff Miller, who I’ve known for almost 40 years, I remember when you were 190 lbs. I hope you get back to that weight without any potential surgery. Of course I suffer from sleep apnea and the key to alleviating this disorder is to loose the weight. I’m sure you know, but sleep apnea weakens the heart, which has a whole list of side effects in itself. And it is a fact, my weight loss has eliminated a lot of those diseases: high blood pressure and hypertension to name a couple. When I was 230 lbs I definitely felt the difference in my body. And when I hit a certain plateau everything began to feel better. Now that I am between 213 and 216 lbs I feel like I was during my NFL days.
You know, I am very proud of my weight loss, but a little anger still goes through me when I realize how much of my life was wasted when I was larger. I wear my nice suits now, which I couldn’t wear a year ago. I talked to Jackie Jackson of the Jackson 5, and he heard about my weight loss surgery. He said that when he saw me last year at the UCLA vs. USC game he wanted to advise me to “back away from the table”, but he didn’t want to embarrass me. I told him, I wish he had told me a year ago, because I needed a reality check. And I have run into several people over the last six months who ask me what happened to my health. Well, too many sweet potato pies etc. that’s what happened to my health. Just think, I would sit down to the table and eat an entire T-bone steak, mashed potatoes, veggies and a sweet potato pie in one sitting. Actually, the only thing good about those meals was the amount of water I was drinking. But really, it didn’t matter because the rest of the meal was disastrous.
I know in my last blog I said I wanted to be 210 lbs by this time. However I am still at my plateau between 213 and 216 lbs. That is the way it is, but my body is still deceiving; muscle weights more than fat. And it is not about the numbers, I am at a healthy stage for my body type right now.
One thing I want to say to the people reading my blogs, you need to contact liteandhope.com to respond to their new package with I-Flow corporation, Metagenics pre and post operation vitamins and protein shakes, the financing of gastric bypass surgery, Prudential Life insurance, and the skin and laser treatment for post operation patients. It is an entire package deal through Lite and Hope.
So when we talk next time, I hope to be a solid 210 lbs, but if not, then at least I will look it. Until next time!

Hi Anthony:
I am having surgery with Dr. Wittgrove on Tues. the 19th.(Sept). I met with him yesterday for my pre op physical. He sure put my mind at ease. I feel that I am in the very best of hands. I have been anxious and nervous about the surgery, now I am excited about it! Thanks for all your posts!

Anthony,
Thanks for those words of encouragement, lol. Your right, I should not have any fear. My anxiety level and excitement is up, but at this moment, this time of day I have no fear. And yes, we all cannot get out of this life without dying and only God knows when my time is up and He is ready for me to come home. You know how I look at this surgery.........as a jump start to a better way of living. Like I said before, in earlier an post, I know this surgery is not a quick fix to be smaller. There will be work I have to do for the rest of my life. I too have had moments of wondering what the hell did I do to myself. But, all that is behind me now. I cannot wait to see the more beautiful me waiting to come in full bloom.
Thanks so much for responding. You don't know what it means to me. I have several other guys who have gone through the surgery and I talk with them regularly. For anyone else who may be reading this, I truly understand what it means to have a support team in place. It makes the world of difference.
» 08/17/2006:
Im back! Back from the College Hall of Fame enshrinement, and it was a great time. Most of the enshrinement inductees noticed my massive weight loss, and Joe Washington, smoke through the keyhole, asked me: AD whats different about you? I replied: Joe, Ive lost 75-85 pounds in the last five months. And he said: Oh thats the difference. Haha. During my stay in South Bend, Indiana, I did a lot of press: radio, TV, and print, and of course everyone was asking me about my gastric bypass surgery. The main question asked was: What was the main reason for me having the surgery? My sleep apnea, which facilitated my obesity, was one of the main reasons for me having the procedure. And well, looking at me just on face value, I wouldnt seem like the best candidate for the procedure. However, I had some medical tests done, and those results showed the true effects my weight was having on my health. I had the results of a man 300+ pounds! And that was just another sign that why I should have the surgery.
Sleep apnea creates so many ailments in the body: diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, and these things are critical. And I have noticed that people are in disbelief when it comes to the reality of the situation that these things could potentially end ones life. What most people dont realize, is that obesity is a contributing factor to illnesses, and if I had known ten years ago, that gaining weight would create these problem, I would have religiously watched my weight. I was nave of what weight can do to the body then, and I didnt watch my eating and exercise habits. But that was then, and this is now. And I want all the people to listen to me when I say that weight issues are not a game that one can win, especially when one gets older. We also need to start educating our children about obesity and its mal effects. I hope through my blog (or journal one might call it) that people will take note to what I talk about. I consider myself knowledgeable when it comes to obesity through my pre and post operation experiences.
Since I mentioned post operation, I learned a vital lesson about a week ago. Prior to me going to South Bend, Indiana I was on a construction site, 60 miles out of Irvine, California, and to conserve gas and mileage, I was staying in the city of Burbank, close to the construction site. I was eating my normal diet of eggs in the morning, beans for lunch, and meat and beans for dinner, while continuing to take my vitamins and supplements. I found myself getting weak, shaky and breaking into cold sweats. Even with all the natural intake of protein I was getting, it wasnt enough. I wasnt taking my Metagenics protein shakes and therefore I was not feeling up to my normal par. Therefore, I took the initiative upon myself and drove 60 some-odd miles all the way back to Irvine, to get my Metagenics shakes, to take them back with me, in order for me to have them everyday. It was amazing how much power that one shake holds. Because me not having that one shake in the morning effected me for the remainder of the day. This is all a learning process of what the body can and cant do; and like I have said before, bodies are different, they react to different things in a variety of different ways. But, post gastric bypass bodies need protein to maintain a good quality of life. And just a side note with that, the chemicals and enzymes used to break down foods into entities the body can use are no longer in the new smaller stomach. These acids are in the old stomach, which is not attached to anything anymore, so this really is a life-long commitment to a dietary and lifestyle change; one for the better of course.
On yet another subject, while waiting to connect to our flight to Los Angeles from South Bend, we had a layover in OHara International airport we met a woman, Sondra along with her family. They are from Southern California and recognized me form both the press and football. We got to talking about sleep apnea, and while pulling something out of her bag, she said, well then youll recognize this. It was a c-pap machine. She also told me she had diabetes and high blood pressure, along with her sleep apnea. I knew that some women get touchy about this topic, but I thought to myself, hey, I can help this woman, so I said to hell with it and I asked her how much she weighed. I guessed about 230-240, and she thought may be between 210-220, but like most women she didnt really know. She didnt really agree with me, but I told her not to be surprised if she weighed more than her original assumption.
Sondra had a lot of questions for me, which I tried to answer to the best of my ability, and she mentioned that her doctor didnt believe she was a proper candidate for the gastric bypass procedure, even with all her health concerns. I strongly recommended to her having the procedure through the Lite and Hope network. I told her about the program and Prudential life insurance, and Syneron, Metagenics, I-Flow corporation and their OnQ PainBuster, etc, and I even mentioned to her the financing plans Lite and Hope offers to qualifying patients, and of course I recommended Dr. Alan Whittgrove. And I hope she follows my advice and contacts Lite and Hope.
After speaking with Sondra, I understand more why patients have to pass psychological analyses pre-surgery. The doctors are just making sure people are fit for this life altering yet saving procedure. Some people out there are just plain scared! I wasnt scared because I knew that if I didnt do something, I was going to be a dead man regardless, so really what did I have to loose? I told her honestly, with your high blood pressure, diabetes, and sleep apnea, if you dont do something about it, youre going to be dead anyway. Maybe not tomorrow, or in a month, but it would kill her. In a joking manner I told her to imagine me on one shoulder saying to her, she can sleep without that machine and not have to worry about poking herself to check her blood sugar levels, and on the other shoulder me telling her about how good she is going to look in that size four dress shell be able to wear again after loosing 100+ pounds. And then in a serious manner, I asked her whether or not she wanted to see her daughter graduate from high school and go off to college. And that really got her attention. Of course I want to see her grow up and mature, she said. So I told her not to be scared and make excuses to rationalize things, because at the end of the day, she wont be here for too long if she kept this up.
Well, back to me, I am maintaining my weight. In South Bend I was 215, and one day I was actually 213 pounds. I am on my same routine, and I would like to add that I had some great comments on my last blog. I encourage you to continue responding. I hope that I am helping some of you suffering from this disease. And remember, there is a plan for all of us and there is hope; if you follow my lead you will succeed.
Until next time! My goal is to be 210 pounds!

Good morning, Anthony,
I JUST read your entrys on the lite and hope website. I finally found the website after misplacing all of the information from our family's return flight from O'Hare airport. However! I did remember Dr. Wittgrove's name and went from there. I have my surgery scheduled for the 20th of this month. As I told Dr. Wittgrove, and many, many other people, I give all the credit to you! With your enthusiasm, sincerety and first-hand knowledge of the by-pass surgery, I finally made the decision to get it done.

Hi Anthony. I have commented before on your journal before. I asked a couple of questions, but never got a response. No problem. I do know your a busy man.
Well, I finally have a surgery date, Sept. 25th. And even though I am so excited about it, I am also very, very scared. Not about the surgery itself or dying etc. I have a deep relationship with Jesus so that allows me to "walk through the valley of the shadow of death". My fear is coming from hoping that I do not returning to my old way of eating. I really, really want to be successful at this weight loss proceedure. And I am fully aware that the surgery is not a quick fix, I have work to do. I am just hoping that the cravings to eat certain foods and late night eating will diminish after the surgery. Can you give me any, any type of feedback as to how this is going for you? When I seen your picture before the surgery I swore I was looking in the mirror. I am 5'8", 316, and suffer from diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure as and I have an extra disease being HIV positive. I have started journaling on my myspace.com page. And I am starting to get numbers of other men who have had the surgery. I would desperately love to become a pen-pal of yours and have you in my support group. I don't know if you do that sort of thing, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
Well, hope you read this comment.
Much love,

Hi Anthony!
Your blogs really encourage us! Keep them coming....we look forward to them. We think you're doing great, keep up the good work. Our surgery date is a month away. We are excited and nervous. But also know we're in the best of hands with Dr. Wittgrove. It's kind of scary to think about the possibility of medical problems after obesity surgery. But having high blood pressure and high triglycerides is also very dangerous and certainly are medical problems. Thanks for your encouragement!

A.D., you looked great in your Hall of Fame photos. The one showing you passing brought me back to your Q-back days at San Fernando. I was 190 lbs. when I played at Fernando and am now at 245. My high was aprox 260 and I suffered from sleep apnea also. It is not as bad now and the more weight I lose, the fewer apnea episodes I have. You are so right when you talk about the effects of obesity. I take blood pressure meds. and my goal is 210 lbs. and to get off the meds. Your story is inspiring and helps me watch what I eat. Take care and thanks for the blogs, Jeff Miller.

Well, I’m back! First of all I would like to respond to Tammy Watson. It is really good you went from 326 lbs to 258 lbs and I would like to congratulate you on your success and let you know that is a great weight loss accomplishment. Everyone is different when it comes to weight loss, since I was 300 lbs but I was more bulk and muscle than fat. However, too much is too much, regardless of muscle or fat, and it will still put strain on the body’s organs especially the heart. I personally took the gastric bypass surgery as a catalyst for my weight loss and a starting point to gain control of my body. I think of it as taking care of a car. I needed a tune up and a good lubrication; and now I’m good to go cruising down the highway. Even though my metabolism is on fire, I am still at a stand still with my weight. I continue to fluxuate between 214 and 220 lbs. When people see me, they think I am way under 200 lbs, but I have to remind them muscle weighs more than fat. I remember when I was playing professional football, and linebackers would hit me. These linebackers would think I was 180 lbs and after the game, they would ask me how much I weighed. I would tell them I was a 205 lbs running back. They would say I didn’t look it at all, and this is still the response I get when I am out and about.
Manny, you are absolutely right! You feel so much better after you take those pounds off. I am glad to hear you had your surgery last month and that you are taking control of your life. I will say to you what I say to other patients, gastric bypass surgery is just a tool in use in order to loose weight, it is not the cure all, and you still must follow the rules and stick with them. It is a life changing procedure and commitment.
I want to let you people know according to the Insider TV show with Pat O’Brian, you will see me on late next week in August, either the 3rd or 4th. And because I taped it a while back, you will see me at 228 lbs. Just visualize me 10-15 lbs lighter, and that’s me today. The amazing thing still to me is the transformation of my body, which I see in the mirror from day to day. My waist was a size 48 before the surgery, and now it is a 34. My hat size is smaller, my feet and hands are thinner; people actually tell me I look gaunt, and that they think I didn’t need the surgery. On the contrary, I needed the surgery and I am glad I had it. Once I learned about the damage I was doing to my body, I knew I had to make a life altering changes.
For Jerry, who wrote me a few months ago, I am glad you were proof of your surgery. And yes, we football types have the same basic body types. And according to your reports to me, you lost 40 lbs really quickly. Keep it up! It is good you go to the gym everyday, but be careful. Don’t over do yourself, because I don’t, and you don’t want to have complications later from over exhaustion. And I am so happy for the success you’re having after your surgery with Dr. Ellner. It’s good she stresses walking. I want to let you know that I was very motivated to walk like that after surgery. Even if I am not working out, I walk to places. It is so simple to take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.
On to other news, I have had several conversations with Carnie Wilson, and I look forward to seeing her on VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club season 4. Moreover, I agree with the program the show utilizes. I hope this is a successful journey for her.
I am looking forward to my enshrinement in South Bend, Indiana. The people in my enshrinement class have not seen me since December of 2005. I am sure they will be shocked when they see me. Especially Joe Washington who says when he runs the football “it’s like smoke going through a key whole.”
I am still in touch with my team, everyone with Lite and Hope, Mickey and Vodge, Julie from I Flow, Scott and Lee from Metagenics, and Vince my dermatologist, who is a key person with Syneron and their great new laser invention, and everyone else who has helped me along the way. I suggest everyone to everyone both pre and post operations, talk to Vodge and Mickey form Lite and Hope via either e-mail or phone, to discuss with them about all the exciting and beneficial programs Lite and Hope is offering: financial options, Prudential life insurance, etc.
And last but not least, I have talked with Dr. Alan Wittgrove and he likes my progress so far. He is very happy, and pleased.
I will talk to you all after I get back from South Bend, Indiana from the College Hall of Fame enshrinement. Until next time!

good luck and have fun with the enshrinement coming up.
I am going to be ready to start our high school season in 3 weeks and go for another CIF championship. My coaches did a great job carrying the torch for me as a head coach when I was out this month.
Take care!
good luck to everyone who is thinking about this surgery. My cholestreal is down from 275 to 160 in less than a month. I no longer snore like the polar express train.. I have no joint or hip pain any more. I am down 10 pant sizes from 52 to 42 in and more and more and more. oh ya, my blood pressure is down for 145/90 to 110/70.

Ok, well I’m back! I didn’t get too many responses last time. I guess people are tired of me, but I’ll keep talking anyway! I hope Lite and Hope has posted photos of me so you all can see the progression of my weight loss. What still shocks me, is that with such great amounts of pounds being shed, the shape of the body changes; especially the face. I know I have lost a lot of weight when my hat size goes down. I even told my lady that my head looks like a voodoo doll; it’s shrunken! I am not complaining though. On the contrary, I am enjoying my weight loss. And, I just love seeing people who get into clothes they don’t belong in. Both men and women who are large, they try and hide and cover up their size by wearing clothes that are too big. This only makes the body look larger and the person look fatter. I pride myself on being able to wear nice clothes that fit, and being able to wear a shirt tucked into my pants with a belt. That is a tremendous act; I never thought I would be able to do again. It is also encouraging when I feel good and look good (at least I think so), and people tell me I look healthy, and good. It makes me want to continue this new way of life really. The surgery may have only been ninety minutes, but it has really changed my life. It has given me a life, if I can say that.
As most of you know, I attended the American Society for Bariatric Surgery conference in San Francisco three weeks ago. Both Lite and Hope and I feel it was a very successful outing. It was a very busy weekend for me. The time I spent at the I-Flow booth, signing autographs as well as telling people about my story and also about OnQ PainBuster. I told them that if they ever had any type of surgical procedure, they needed to request this device to be used. I also spent a day at the Metagenics booth. They are the protein, vitamin and supplement company I endorse for both pre and post surgical use. And then I ended my stay at the conference at the Lite and Hope booth representing Syneron, a company with a new laser surgery machine. I think we had a very successful weekend, and we made a lot of contacts for bringing this type of procedure (laser surgery) to gastric bypass patients, post surgery. At the conference, there was also a booth for Prudential Life, an insurance company promoting a new plan for patients who maintain their surgery after a year. These patients will receive life insurance policies at the non-smoker rates. Also, through Lite and Hope they now have financing available for the gastric bypass surgery. Please contact Vodge at Lite and Hope for more details. So, I feel all the people apart of the Lite and Hope team had a very successful event over a three-day period.
Now, I want to mention something that happened to me while at the conference, that I thought was very interesting. My first night there, I was out to dinner and I had a fish wrap plate. I started to feel a little bad, and excused myself from the table. The lighting was bad, and I had not seen that there where noodles in the dish I was eating. I got so sick. I was in the restroom dumping for an hour that night. The pasta had swollen in my stomach, and had to come out. Ironically, there were doctors and nurses at the table I was at, and appropriately enough, they were concerned with my episode. After my episode was done, I felt better! Surprisingly, I had my appetite back and I wanted to eat. However, it was closing time and I returned to my room. I ordered a pitcher of water and a bowl of beans from room service. If anyone has ever gotten sick like this before, you understand the amount of protein lost by regurgitating. Therefore, the beans came in handy when trying to replenish my protein levels. Furthermore, the body is very dehydrated after an episode of sickness like this, so the water was good as well. The next day I ran into all the same doctors and nurses, and even the nurses assistants. They all had so many questions for me: How did I feel? Was I sore? Did I have an appetite? Etc. The big theme derived from this experience is that gastric bypass and the patient’s recovery are all subjective. It is a total learning process. Patients have to follow the rules while still discovering what works with the body and, of course, does not.
Upon returning to Orange County, I was introduced to a restaurant: StoneFire Grill. And if any of you out there have this restaurant locally (I hear there are only four locations), I highly recommend it. The food is fresh and flavorful and above all else, it is healthy. I eat the tri-tip and cowboy beans as they call them. And these beans are prepared properly. There is no juice poured on top of them. I can say, this place has the best variety of any of the restaurants I have eaten at post recovery. The red meat is good, as well as the chicken being juicy. Another restaurant I enjoy is Five Crowns in Corona Del Mar. They make a great little prime rib, and I have sides of broccoli and carrots. It is fantastic. After having gastric bypass surgery, food and eating becomes a hassle sometimes. I never know if the food is going to stay down, or if it’s going to go down easily and so much thought has to go into preparing the meal. This is a real commitment and it is a relief to have a restaurant to go to as an alternative. Preparing food at home is ultimately the best thing to do. However, being able to have someone else to the measuring and the extra effort to make the meal, it just makes the ritual of eating actually enjoyable for my lady and I. And enjoying food is important. Because, yes obviously we as humans need to eat for nutriment, but when we just eat to be eating, that is when we run into problems. Learning limits and boundaries is necessary to enjoy food. I guess it is true: too much of a good thing is bad. If you eat poorly, you get bad results and vise versa, if you eat well you end up with great results. As for my diet, it has pretty much remained the same. Breakfast is getting better, I am glad to report. And it has been emblazoned on my mind: chew Chew CHEW.
To end, I would just like to share a story about a colleague of mine, Joe McDonnell. Joe had the procedure as well, and he might get upset with me for mentioning the following, but I ran into his doctor at the ASBS conference, and he told me Joe’s real weight pre-operation. Joe says he was 685, however the truth is he was 710 lbs. Currently Joe is 375 lbs and is in great condition. His life is going well, his radio show on 1150am, he is in love (it’s about time man), and I am truly happy for him. I joined him on his radio show and we talked for about two hours with callers about the surgery. I can tell you, I am not too sure the general public is very well informed about this procedure. With that said, I feel with people in the public eye (like Carnie, and I and Joe, and Al Roker) it brings awareness to the situation and I feel confident in saying I think public knowledge is expanding and facts about this life saving procedure are circulating. I am proud to say, that of this morning I weighed 217 lbs. Although my weight loss has slowed down, I am continuing to loose inches and I am guessing that by the time of the Hall of Fame enshrinement in August I will be 205 lbs.
When all is said and done, I still need to hear from you people. I like hearing your comments and other stories of people ready to make a change and be proud of themselves again. I know some of you might be embarrassed or ashamed of identifying yourself, and that is ok. Talking about it helps. And writing it helps even more. Where do you see yourselves a month after the surgery? Or a year? Will you be able to walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded? Will you be able to tie your own show laces? I know from experience, the independence gained from being able to do things for yourself is a feeling like none other. Well, until next time! You’ll hear from me at the end of the month.

Hi Anthony,
I wrote months ago while working to get approved for surgery. I watched your surgery live and have followed your progress. I look often for your updates, because we have so many similarities, football and body type.
I am a football coach and a public figure and at 16 days post op... I am down 40 pounds and lots of things are happening.
I go to the gym every day and lift very light and walk at the beach. I have a trainer hired for next month when the incisions are all healed...
Dr. Ellner did my surgery in san diego and she was awesome. She stressed walking so much and I was taken from the recovery room to my room and awoke asking the nurses to take me for walks in the hospital. I walked the next morning my self for over an hour and have continued it. The doctors have said they have not seen a patient so motivated.
I am motivated but informed. I have read and read and researched and know this is going to work for me and I will keep my muscle mass.
I have bought the shakes and vitamins from Metagenics and want to know more about the suppliments. I want to keep my muscle mass and want to do it properly.
Am I able to talk to your contacts at Metagenics...for more education and a plan?
Are you ever in San Diego or in San Clemente, would love to meet you.
Thanks,
Coach Jerry
